Quels sont les différents types de plongées?
Different types of diving :
To simplify, there are two main types of diving:
- Freshwater diving (lake diving) and
- Saltwater diving (the ocean, Great Salt lake and the Dead Sea).
Within those 2 main types of diving, there are 6 sub-categories of diving:
- Recreational diving,
- Technical diving,
- Cave diving,
- Free diving & snorkeling,
- Commercial diving,
- Scientific diving.
When doing Recreational Diving we are diving with a SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) gear to explore the underwater world. We are diving within the limits depending of our level and we do not do decompression dives.
The first stories of divers date from 800 to 600BC (Greek history). At that time ...READ MORE...
Snorkeling is as well a type of diving without any scuba gear. However the difference with free diving is that you dont have to hold your breath as you are equipped with a mask and a tuba. You can choose to pratice snorkeling with fins or without ...READ MORE...
SEA DIVING vs LAKE DIVING
When diving in saltwater, the surrounding is more colorful (coral reefs) than in freshwater and the marine biodiversity (marine fauna and flora) is richer.
The water temperature tends to be higher in saltwater as freshwater spots are mostly lakes in higher altitude.
Hence diving in freshwater requires more skills and experience. Remember that extra training is mandatory if you need to dive with a dry suit in the case of low water temperature.
The visibility will be much better in saltwater (40 meters +) than in freshwater (3 to 10 meters) and you will encounter less thermoclines.
However it's very good preparation to start diving in a lake! Then you will be like a fish once in the ocean.
Caves and wrecks will be more reachable in fresh water as generally lakes are more shallow than the ocean.
Mickael Menduno, an English man, created the term technical diving in 1990. At that time it was a term used to call the type of dives done by the "crazies" in the dive community.
The goal was to standardize equipment and procedures and to gather divers doing the same kind of dive activities as wreck penetration, cave diving, deep diving ...READ MORE...
The marine biodiversity hold a plethora of species while diving offers a plethora of different activities which are called diving specialties.
Most of the diving specialties require some specific training. Check out our guide ...READ MORE...
RECREATIONAL DIVING vs TECHNICAL DIVING
The more common type is recreational diving. Technical and cave diving requires more advanced trainings. Free diving and snorkeling is without any scuba gear. Check out more details in our guide about those different types of diving and diving specialties.
Commercial diving is for professionals generally working in the industry of oil and gas. Scientific diving is practiced by scientific who are undertaking some scientific underwater researches.
